11 adult sika deer with 3 fawn born in early May.
The oldest deer in the park is Eglantine who is 22 years old!
Sika and fallow deer are approximately the same size and their fur is similar in colour: tawny/russet with white spots. To tell them apart, observe the males’ antlers: fallow deer have palmate antlers with many points whereas sika deer antlers are less ramified, also fallow deer have white legs, these are black/brown for sika deer.
The rutting season offers a great spectacle in the months of September and October.
Are sika deer intruders?
Sika deer are originally from Asia. These small cervidae live in large families. Sika males’ antlers have few ramifications with a maximum of eight horns. The female deer give birth to one fawn each spring. The new-born deer are not steady on their legs and are unable to follow their mothers who keep them hidden during the two first weeks and leave them on their own during the day: don’t get too close to the fawns, they have not been abandoned!
